Long Beach Washington – looking for dispersed camping/where to camp in dunes?

Spoke with someone at the visitors bureau and she told me there was no camping on the beach itself, however, we can camp on public property in the dunes. She was unable to specify where that would be… any info would be great!
Beachdog, thanks for the info. Those places look great, however, my girlfriend and I prefer dispersed/primitive camping that is free. So are you saying the info I receive from the visitors bureau is incorrect, and that you cannot camp on the dunes by the beach? She mentioned you must be above the water line and on public land. Thank you!

Sorry to hear you didn’t get what you needed from our local Visitors Bureau. They usually do a great job.

There’s no camping on the beach here but there IS great camping. There are more than 1000 RV spaces on the Peninsula:

Some of them also have tent spaces; that page tells which.

Cape Disappointment State Park is another great spot for RV and tent camping: http://www.capedisappointment.org/visit/cape_d.html

This weekend will be crazy! With the 4th of July being on Saturday, there will be more than usual folks visiting. Combine that with the type of fireworks you can buy in WA and the beach can look like a war zone.

If you do come out, join us on the beach on Sunday for the great cleanup! http://funbeach.com/events/beachcleanup/index.html

UPDATE 06/30/09

It’s true that you cannot camp on the beach (State Highway) or in the dunes, which are either private property or protected public lands. The above the water line thing is true but you have to find someone with land that will let you camp on it. All the public dunes are State Parks land and environmentally protected without camping as a permitted use. It’s actually one of the things that makes our beach unique; unlike other beaches, our dunes aren’t developed. The dunes are fragile and ever-changing; the 8.2-mile, paved Discovery Trail is an awesome way to experience them on foot or non-motorized transport (bicycles, roller blades, etc.)

There is a small campground on Radar Ridge, DNR land, but it is closed right now. Here’s a page with info (scroll down) http://www.funbeach.com/attractions/picnics.html

…and here’s the DNR link where you can find out when it opens again. http://www.dnr.wa.gov/RecreationEducation/Topics/OpenClosureNotices/Pages/amr_pacific_cascade_region_rec.aspx#pacific

I see Turnerville Campground is open; I haven’t been there myself: Open year-round. Popular with picnickers, hikers, strollers and equestrian, Turnerville campground is just out of Naselle, Washington. The trail is hilly, but the path itself is easy. Access to horse and human water sources, ample parking, good picnic areas and campsites. There are restrooms at the trailhead; the camp and trail are approximately 6 miles long. Expect winding paths through trees, old logging roads and corrals. Drive 6.4 miles west of Rosburg on State Route 4; then turn north onto Salmon River Road.

Western, Snag Lake and Turnerville are all about 20 minutes from the beach. There’s a sun belt there; weather is frequently degrees warmer just that little bit inland.

The only camp sites I know about close to the beach are in the State Park and RV parks. Hope that helps!
