Is International Relations a good major? Any pros and cons to it?
does this major have to do with government? if not, then what? do you have to be good at public speaking?
what type of classes should i be considering when majoring in this major?
anyone know the pros and cons?
what type of job can i get with this major?
is a master degree needed to succeed with this one major?
anything related to International Relations would be helpful in knowing.
thanks everyone! :]
I’m an IR major- and it’s very open, I get to choose most of my classes as long as they’re “internationallly focused” so alot of it has involved international government classes. For example I’m talking international politics, international organizations, international political economy, Foriegn Policy. But I choose to take so many government classes. i’ve also tooken a few classes in world religions. You can also take alot of Geography.
The pros are these are very interesting classes and free based on current events and world history, the cons are they’re all about the same and as a senior I’m getting kinda bored. Sometimes the subject of international relations is too broad.
You can get a job.. sometimes I look into the states department or the United Nations employment page just to see, however your right in the assumption that you would need a master’s degree, most of the “good” jobs require it, especially with the U.N.
If your considering doing something like this I would suggest to pick an area of the world and study it hard- don’t limit yourself- but a specialty will come in handy- rather than knowing a little about everything. Also you should study abroad- i’ve lived abroad twice- once in London and once in Mexico and both experiences changed my life in their own ways.
Also it would be a VERY smart idea to have a good base in another language- for me it would be spanish- but French (think about how many African states this would help with) would be smart, but Arabic is gold right now- the U.N perfers people to know it, and it has really cool writing so why not?
Well I wish you luck!
