Couple questions on beginning figure skating (Clothing, Off-Ice Training, and USFSA Basic Skills 1 and 2)?
Hi everyone. =] I start Figure Skating Lessons on January 12th and I have a couple questions.
Is it really necessary that I get the beige tights for figure skating in Basic 1 and 2? Or can I wait till later? I plan on wearing some sweatpants/workout pants on my first lessons with a comfy T-Shirt and a light jacket. If I do get the tights, should I wear them under the pants?
If I can’t take ballet as off-ice training, what are some things I can do at home, outside, and in the gym? I was thinking about yoga, ab workouts, biking, running, and flexing. I know I need stability and balance as well, but what could I do for that type of training? What else could I do?
Please describe the following Figure Skating tricks in USFSA Basic Skills 1 and 2:
- Rocking horse (I was thinking this is just kind of switching your weight back and forth)
- Foward alternating 1/2 swizzle pumps, in a straight line (slalom-like pattern)
Thanks! I know I ask a lot of questions. D:
No you do not need to get the tights, it is fine to continue to wear pants, but if you get cold easily, then you can wear tights under your pants.
Yoga and Pilate would be perfect. They both help with balance, flexibility, awareness, and core strength. Some type of cardio is good also, for endurance.
A rocking horse is one forward swizzle, one backward swizzle, and you keep alternating and you should make a football shape. You don’t really move, just go back and forth.
( ) like this
A half swizzle is just a swizzle, but one foot stays straight. So for alternating pumps, you would keep your left foot straight and swizzle your right foot, and then switch. You would continue to switch as you go forward.
